THE VITAL LINK BETWEEN MENTAL HEALTH AND EMPOWERMENT: A CRUCIAL PERSPECTIVE FOR YOUTH AND WOMEN IN INDIA

In the journey towards societal progress and economic development, the empowerment of

youth and women is paramount, especially in a nation as diverse and dynamic as India.

However, amidst the discourse on empowerment, one critical aspect often overlooked is mental health. It's imperative to recognise that mental well-being is not just a personal matter but a foundational element for empowerment, particularly for youth and women.

In this blog, we delve into why mental health needs to be prioritised within empowerment frameworks, backed by compelling statistics from India.

Mental Health: A Prerequisite for Empowerment

Empowerment entails providing individuals with the resources, opportunities, and confidence to make informed choices, assert their rights, and participate meaningfully in society. However, achieving empowerment is significantly hindered in the absence of good mental health. For youth and women in India, who face unique societal pressures and systemic barriers, mental well-being serves as the bedrock upon which their empowerment journey is built.

1.Breaking Societal Stigmas

In India, mental health issues are often shrouded in stigma and silence, particularly for women. According to a study by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), approximately 80 million people in India are estimated to be affected by mental health disorders. Addressing mental health openly within empowerment frameworks challenges these stigmas and fosters an environment of acceptance and support.

2. Building Confidence and Self-Efficacy:

Statistics from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) reveal that only 50% of Indian women participate in the labor force. Good mental health enables individuals to develop resilience, self-esteem, and a sense of agency—all crucial components of empowerment. Women who feel confident in their abilities and worth are more likely to pursue education, enter the workforce,

and engage in civic activities.

3. Overcoming Systemic Barriers:

Women in India face systemic barriers such as gender discrimination, limited access to education and healthcare, and cultural norms that restrict their autonomy. According to the World Bank, women in India are 17% less likely to own a mobile phone than men, limiting their access to information and support networks. Addressing mental health within empowerment initiatives helps women navigate these challenges more effectively by providing them with the necessary support and coping strategies.

1. Economic Growth and Productivity:

A mentally healthy population is more productive, innovative, and resilient. According to a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO), for every $1 invested in scaling up treatment for common mental disorders in India, there is a return of $4 in improved health and productivity. By investing in mental health as part of empowerment efforts, India can unlock the full potential of its youth and women, leading to a more prosperous economy.

2. Social Cohesion and Inclusivity:

Addressing mental health promotes social cohesion and inclusivity by reducing inequalities and fostering a more empathetic and supportive society. Empowered youth and women are more likely to advocate for the rights of marginalised groups, contributing to a more equitable and just society.

3. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Achievement:

Mental health is intricately linked to several Sustainable Development Goals, including health and well-being, gender equality, and quality education. By integrating mental health into empowerment strategies, India can make significant strides towards achieving these goals, ultimately leading to a more sustainable and resilient future.

As India continues its journey towards inclusive development, prioritising mental health in empowerment efforts is not just a choice but a necessity for building a brighter future for all.
